As a member of the highly competitive Missouri Valley Conference, Southern Illinois University sponsors 18 intercollegiate sports.

Each season, the Salukis build on a tradition of academic and athletic excellence.  Since 2001, Southern Illinois University has won 18 conference championships and appeared in 24 NCAA tournaments or regionals.     

• Since 2003 Saluki football has won four Gateway/Valley Football championships and earned six straight appearances into the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, the second longest streak in the FCS
• Saluki football has won the Valley's Academic Excellence award in 2004, 2005 and 2006
• Saluki basketball won 6-straight Missouri Valley Conference championships (2002-2007) and earned a sixth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance advancing to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in 2007
• Saluki softball has won Valley championships in 2004 and 2005 and made five consecutive NCAA tournament appearances
• Saluki Track & Field had four NCAA Mideast Regional Champions in 2006 and one Mideast Regional Champion in 2007 and has recently won conference championships in Indoor Track and Cross Country in 2007 and 2008
• Since 2002, Saluki student-athletes have won 16 Academic All-American awards and averaged more than 50 Academic All-Conference awards per year
